Santa Susana Monkey Flower
The Sticky Monkey Flower normally blooms a yellowish-orange color, and they can bloom in mountainside-covering amounts. But there is one place where it only blooms this lovely brick-red color. It does this on the east side of the Santa Susana Pass in southern California. There it is called the Santa Susana Bush Sticky Monkey Flower. A probably un-related fact is that this area was contaminated with nuclear waste from the old rocket facility on the hill - perhaps that accounts for the color of the blooms in this area. Mimulus longiflorus var. rutilus (aka. Diplacus longiflorus var. rutilus)
