Calochortus plummerae

Here is a typically-colored Plummer's Mariposa Lily. A dark maroon on the tops of the petals, yellow below. Pink inside, with all of those yellow hairs. All lilies have three petals and three sepals. Most lilies have sepals that are very similar to the petals, and so they appear to have six petals. But the calochortus lilies have small, curled sepals, similar to other flowers. The calochortus lilies also tend to have a pronounced bump on the outside of the petals. The inside of the bump is the nectary gland, protected by the hairs. Plummer's Mariposa (Butterfly) Lily is: Calochortus plummerae (Lily family)
