Shorty Lovelace

Shorty Lovelace was the last of the 'mountain men' to live in the Kings Canyon area of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Shorty was a fur trapper who ran trap lines in the area during winters in the 1930's and 1940's, before it was a national park. He was a short man, just five feet, four inches tall, who built several of these tiny cabins to live in. They were just big enough for a fireplace, a bunk and a table. This one is not even six feet high - and that's on the outside. To get around in the deep snow he hand-carved skis from oak. He trapped fisher, pine marten and the occasional wolverine in one area for a couple of weeks before moving on to the next of his cabins.
