Arches get here by erosion. First you have a big rock which is acted upon by rain, wind, blowing dust, plants, lichen, and time. Eventually a hole is carved out, then enlarged. Unfortunately erosion doesn't stop there. The arch is gradually eroded away. This one shows how it goes.
