Bristlecone Pine

These high-altitude trees are more spectacular in death than in life. Also known as Foxtail Pine, the Bristlecone is named after the sharp, curved barbs on the cones. They can live thousands of years in the harsh climate on the tops of mountains. None of the other trees survive up here, at around eleven thousand feet elevation.
